Yes it is. Statistics show that it is the safest country in the region. Also the people are very welcoming and friendly. News coverage of the past political unrest in the 80’s along with natural disaster, paved the way to a country with a bad reputation. Fortunately Nicaragua has demonstrated in the last 25 years to be a country with a deep willing to move ahead and work strongly to rebuild a country for a better future.
We do require advance payment in order to reserve all services. We will send full terms and conditions along with our offer, which outline payment conditions and cancelation policies.
No, you will only need your valid driver’s license from your country of origin to drive in Nicaragua. Roads leading to the most important tourist attractions are in good conditions. While you are traveling you might find some check points where police officers control the documentation of vehicles. Usually policemen are respectful and comprehensive with foreign tourists.
To enter Nicaragua your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Nicaragua. Furthermore, an onward or return ticket and evidence of sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay are required. No visa is needed for citizens from the United States, Canada, UK and the European Union. When entering the country you will have to purchase a tourist card (US$ 10.00 per person) which is valid for 90 days. Please note that there is an airport departure tax of US$ 42.00, which most airlines have already included in their ticket. If the tax is not included in the ticket, payment can be made at the airline counter upon departure.
Because of fast changing travel restrictions due to Covid, it is important to check with us and with your airline before traveling for the most up-to-date requirements and necessary documentation including a negative PCR test. See more details about entry requirements here.
There are currently no vaccines required upon entry to Nicaragua. However, make sure your routine vaccinations such as tetanus, diphtheria and polio are up to date and think about getting vaccinated against Hepatitis A and B as well as typhoid. Malaria is present throughout the country in areas at altitudes less than 1,000 meters, therefore you should also ask your health care provider about anti-malarial drugs. We suggest that you do not bring along lots of medication – only the ones you need to take regularly – as pharmacies are well stocked. We recommend that you see your doctor or health care provider at least six weeks prior to your trip and follow the advice of health precautions and/or vaccines.
Please note: If arriving from Panama you will need to show that you have been vaccinated against Yellow Fever by presenting a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate. This is not required for travelers who are only transiting through Panama (not leaving the airport) but is required for those who leave the airport.
Mayor credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club and others are widely accepted in hotels and restaurants in most important cities like Managua, Granada, Leon, San Juan del Sur, Masaya, Matagalpa, Jinotega, Chinandega, Estelí, Rivas, Bluefields and others. We also recommend carrying some local cash in low nominations for small purchases. Some souvenirs shops, little restaurants or bars are sometimes not able to accept credit cards.
Even though US dollars are widely accepted throughout the country, it is always a good idea to use the local currency (Cordoba), especially if you plan to buy in small shops and “pulperias” (local grocery stores). Please keep in mind that dollars that are torn up, stained or have writings on them can be rejected in most shopping places, restaurants or even banks. Make sure your bills are in good shape. You can change your Dollars in banks or even on the street with a better exchange rate. You can get bills of 20, 50, 100 and 500 Cordobas. Coins are used for smaller denominations. Euros are still unusual in Nicaragua and these can be changed only by a few banks.
