BIRDWATCHING

Nicaragua offers a large number of bird species for nature lovers to enjoy. A great place for this activity is in the northern highlands of Matagalpa and Jinotega, with its cool climate and high altitude. A hike through the forest in one of the many nature reserves will allow visitors to enter the fascinating world of the vast birdlife.

Unique features:

  • Rain and cloud forests make up the landscape of this area, much of which is protected reserves including the Cerro Arenal Natural Reserve.

  • Higher altitudes in the north mean the region is inhabited by bird populations that are different from the Pacific lowlands.

  • Among the many species to be found are, trogons, warblers, oropendolas, wrens, hawks, parrots, toucans, and woodpeckers.

  • Two interesting species that can also be found are the White-ruffed Manakin and the Keel-billed Toucan.

  • The northern region of Nicaragua is home to one of the world’s most famous and captivating birds: the Resplendent Quetzal.

  • A variety of lodging options within the reserves give easy access to birding activities as well as participating in coffee harvesting.
