Whether you are planning a short break, an annual vacation or even a “staycation” or “workation” here are some tips for taking the headache out of packing for a Central American destination:

  • Bring an 110V adaptor with multiple ports and power surge protector for your various electronic devices – then you have the option of remaining connected or not.

  • Sunblock and insect repellent are readily available to buy at reasonable prices in most destinations – so bring a small amount with the knowledge that you can restock if needed.

  • Bring cash in clean, low denomination US dollar bills with no rips and defacement. You can then change the bills into local currency at your destination. ATM´s are readily available as well for Visa and Mastercard. Credit card purchases are not widely available in smaller locales.

  • Be sure to bring any medication you usually take and also the prescription as most chemists and pharmacies will be able to refill if needed.

  • Shoes can be kept to a minimum as the weather and activities dictate sneakers or walking boots and sandals or flip flops. Clothes can be laundered wherever you are at a small cost and usually within 24 hours.

  • If you wear glasses bring your prescription – repair and replacement are readily available at reasonable rates.

  • Travel cubes are a great way to pack and organize, keeping your luggage to a manageable amount with a light day bag. You will have to be able to carry your own luggage in many locations as porters are not always available – and neither are elevators!

  • Always leave room in your luggage on the outward journey – or bring items that you won´t mind leaving behind – as you will want to take some souvenirs back home with you!
