BLUEFIELDS CITY

The city of Bluefields is the largest in the South Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAS) with approximately 40 thousand inhabitants, representing a rich mix of multiethnic groups like Mestizos, Creole, Misquitos and Ramas.

The pier is one of the main entrances to the city with motor boats coming from Laguna de Perlas, Corn Island and El Rama as well as other communities. You can also reach Bluefields by plane from the capital city of Managua. There are some points of interests in town that can be easily reached by foot, this will allow you to observe the daily life of its inhabitants.

Some unique features of Bluefields include:

  • A main attraction of Bluefields is the “Palo de Mayo” celebration which takes place in the month of May. It is a festival with a mixture of European culture with Afro-Caribbean traditional dances to welcome rain, production and new life. The dance is performed around a tall wooden pole, decorated with colorful ribbons suspended from the top. The black population (immigrants from the British Antilles, especially from Jamaica) took over a European custom and mixed this with their rhythm and dances, thus creating a unique cultural expression full of energy and colors.

  • The main church of the city is Moravian, but there is also a catholic church by the Parque Central.

  • Apparently, the name of “Bluefields” comes from a Dutch pirate called “Blauvelt” who sailed the Caribbean Sea.
