MANAGUA

The department of Managua is a dynamic region offering a wide variety of interesting opportunities. It has a total population of approximately 2 million people, most of them living in the city capital of Managua. Due to its rich volcanic soil, the department of Managua produces an ample array of agricultural crops such as corn, beans, coffee, rice, sugar cane, sorghum, bananas, plantains, pineapples, papayas, dragon fruits, etc.

Nicaragua’s capital city, Managua, offers visitors archaeological sites, a unique modern catholic cathedral, Sandinistas-revolution monuments, museums, art galleries, handicraft markets, volcanic lakes, shopping malls, popular markets, discos, casinos, nightlife and international restaurants.

Some unique features of Managua include:

  • One of the most remarkable geographical features of Managua are its long wide beaches on the Pacific Ocean. Los Cardones, Masachapa, Pochomil and Montelimar, are very popular on weekends and especially during Easter.

  • The department of Managua holds the second largest fresh water lake of the country, Lake Xolotlan.

  • The region of Managua is crossed by a hill chain, “Las Sierritas”, which rises at the highest elevation of 950 meters above sea level where high quality coffee is traditionally grown.

  • Managua is close to the active volcanoes of Momotombo and Masaya.

  • Two of the most important nature reserves of the Pacific Basin, “Chocoyeros” and “Montibelli”, are nestled in the outskirts of the capital holding significant wildlife and flora.
